Helping Your Child Breathe, Sleep, and Thrive
When a child struggles to breathe well, everything else struggles too – sleep, focus, growth, mood, and development. At Luna Wellness Centre, we
understand how unsettling it can be to watch your child snore through the night, wake up exhausted, or seem consistently restless. You are not alone in this, and you deserve clear answers – not more confusion.
Our airway support services are designed with your whole family in mind. We take a collaborative, evidence-based approach to pediatric airway concerns – working alongside your child’s existing care team and our own multidisciplinary providers to find solutions that actually fit your life.
Pediatric airway support refers to a range of assessments and treatments that address how a child breathes – particularly during sleep.
When the airway is narrow, underdeveloped, or obstructed, it can lead to a variety of concerns that are often misunderstood or overlooked in traditional healthcare settings.
Airway concerns in children are closely connected to oral development, jaw structure, muscle function, and even tongue posture. That’s why dentistry plays such an important role – the structure of a child’s mouth and jaw directly influences how well they breathe.
Children can’t always tell you when something feels wrong-and airway concerns are often mistaken for behavioral issues, allergies, or simply being a light sleeper.
Feeding challenges, breathing concerns, and oral function are often connected. Treating one in isolation can miss the full picture. This is exactly why we bring multiple providers together in one place.
Pediatric sleep apnea is more common than many parents realize – and it looks quite different from adult sleep apnea. While adults often present with excessive daytime sleepiness, children with sleep apnea may appear hyperactive, inattentive, or emotionally dysregulated. It’s not uncommon for kids with sleep-disordered breathing to be assessed for ADHD before the airway concern is ever identified.
Obstructive sleep apnea in children occurs when the soft tissues in the throat – or structural features of the jaw and airway-partially or fully block the airway during sleep. The brain senses the drop in oxygen and wakes the body just enough to restore breathing. This can happen dozens of times a night, quietly disrupting sleep quality without the child or parent ever knowing.
Left unaddressed, pediatric sleep apnea can affect growth hormone release (which peaks during deep sleep), cardiovascular health, cognitive development, and emotional wellbeing. Early support matters, and the good news is that children’s airway concerns are often very responsive to treatment, especially when caught early.
It’s a common belief that snoring is harmless in children, but habitual snoring (more than three nights per week) is considered a form of sleep-disordered breathing and is worth investigating. Even without full apneic events, snoring can indicate that your child’s airway is working harder than it should be during sleep.
Snoring related to airway structure or oral function may respond well to
airway-focused dental care, myofunctional therapy, or a combination of both. At Luna Wellness Centre, our team works together to understand why your child is snoring – not just manage the symptom.
Airway-focused dentistry looks at the relationship between a child’s jaw development, bite, palate shape, and oral muscle function – and how these factors influence breathing, sleeping, and overall health.
When indicated, dental appliance therapy can help gently expand the palate, support jaw development, and create more space for the airway, often during the window of growth when children’s bones are most adaptable. These approaches work best when paired with myofunctional therapy to retrain the muscles of the tongue, face, and throat for healthier function.
Every care plan at Luna starts with a thorough assessment and clear, honest conversation about what we’re seeing, what options exist, and what you can expect.
Airway concerns rarely exist in isolation. That’s why Luna Wellness Centre was built as a hub – a place where families can access the full range of support they need without being sent from provider to provider with no one connecting the dots.
We also maintain a strong network of trusted referral partners – including ENT physicians and sleep medicine providers – so that if your child needs additional support beyond what we offer, you’ll never feel left to navigate it alone.
We know that coming to a new provider can feel overwhelming – especially when you’ve already been through the loop of appointments, referrals, and unanswered questions. At Luna, we do things differently.
We start by getting a full picture of your child's concerns, history, and goals. No rushed appointments.
