Oral Appliance Therapy
Oral Device Therapy
Luna Wellness Centre offers custom-made dental devices approved by Health Canada to help treat obstructive sleep apnea non-invasively. Wondering how a mouthguard can help you sleep better? These appliances are designed to gently hold your lower jaw in a forward position to keep your airway clear during sleep and reduce or eliminate your sleep apnea symptoms. Most of our patients see the difference from the very first night: they and their bed partners not only start enjoying a quieter night (no snoring), but patients also feel more refreshed and alert during their waking hours.
Improving Your Sleep Cannot Get Any Easier
According to the guidelines of the Canadian Sleep Society and Canadian Thoracic Society, oral appliances should be used as a first-line treatment for patients who:
Experience snoring (without sleep apnea)
Suffer from mild or moderate obstructive sleep apnea and cannot tolerate CPAP
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) needs no introduction, as most primary care physicians recommend it as the go-to treatment for sleep apnea. Moreover, not every treatment works the same for every patient. If the CPAP mask makes you feel claustrophobic, the forced air into your lungs feels painful, or you get rashes from the mask, you should look for another treatment instead of resigning yourself to living with your disordered sleep.
Will an Oral Device Work for You?
At Luna Wellness Centre, we conduct a physical examination and imaging studies to see if a patient would benefit from an appliance. We examine your mouth, teeth, jaw, and throat to assess the structure and size of your oral cavity, the position of your jaw, and the size of your tongue and tonsils. We will be looking for any anatomical features that might be contributing to your sleep apnea, such as:
A recessed jaw | A larger tongue |
Enlarged tonsils | Deviated septum |
We may also order an X-ray, CBCT scan, CT scan, or MRI to get detailed visuals of your bones, tissues, and spaces within your mouth, throat, and nasal passages. This gives us a clear idea of the physical obstructions affecting your breathing at night and how to rectify them.
Say Goodbye to Restless Sleep: Choose Oral Appliance Therapy
Luna Wellness Centre provides patients with access to high-quality oral appliances as a primary treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. The type of appliance prescribed is guided by real feedback from those we have successfully treated, the latest advances in the field, and thorough research.
We never recommend over-the-counter solutions like boil-and-bite mouth guards, tongue extenders, chin straps, or tapes to keep your mouth closed. These options just don’t deliver the desired results; worse yet, they can cause issues with your bite or jaw alignment.
